As we move into 1990, we get the start on the Road To WrestleMania VI.
WWF World Title Match
In determining who would get the title shot against Randy Savage in the main event at Royal Rumble 1990, Jack Tunney announced that Hulk Hogan would square off against Jake Roberts. As Hulk Hogan was coming to the ring, Earthquake came up from behind him and clubbed him down to the ground and then sat down onto his chest, causing him to be stretchered away from the ring. Hogan was replaced in that match by The Ultimate Warrior, who went on to beat Jake The Snake. Things between Warrior and Savage never came to blows leading up to the event, but they had some intense staredowns.
The Royal Rumble Match
Thirty competitors will compete with a chance to earn a spot in the main event of WrestleMania VI. Given the magnitude of the opportunity, even the current Intercontinental Champion will be involved, not forced to defend their belt at the Royal Rumble pay per view.
World Tag Team Championship Match
The Rockers defeated The Fabulous Rougeaus in a #1 contenders match, but in the process Marty Jannetty hurt his ankle. When Jack Tunney determined that the top contenders weren’t going to be able to compete, The Fabulous Rougeaus tried to claim they would get the match, but a follow-up match was booked instead. The Rougeau brothers lost yet again, this time against Jimmy Snuka and Jim Duggan. The idea that they would defend the belts against Snuka and Duggan amused The Brain Busters and then laughed about how the other option was The Rockers, which would’ve been just as easy. In an exhibition two weeks before The Rumble, Jim Duggan defeated Tully Blanchard, which quieted Bobby Heenan a bit.
The Genius vs Hercules
The Genius gave a series of vignettes where he spoke about wanting to raise the collective “wrestling IQs of the WWF roster of miscreants”. He had a series of matches against jobber talent where he condescendingly showed them various basic wrestling moves. Finally, a month before The Royal Rumble, Hercules showed up and destroyed The Genius. Two weeks later, The Genius requested “a return engagement”, at which time he really went to work on Hercules, utilizing a significant amount of technical wrestling. When Hercules regained the advantage, The Genius walked out on the match, saying they would have to resume at a later date. When Hercules went backstage, The Genius attacked him, leaving him flat out on the concrete floor.
The Bushwackers vs The Fabulous Rougeaus
The Fabulous Rougeaus were upset about not being able to defeat either team in their #1 contenders matches, so they interrupted a match The Bushwackers were having on Superstars the day before The Royal Rumble. The Bushwackers got back into the ring and did their battering ram headbutt, knocking both Rougeaus out of the ring separately. They retreated, yelling that they’d have revenge “on everyone”!
